Anime Layer Splitter for Color-Based PNG Extraction

A production layer is created for a purpose. An illustrator may separate line art, local color, shadow, highlight, character, prop, background, effect, and adjustment work. Those layers can overlap, contain hidden pixels, use masks and blend modes, and depend on an application’s color calculations. A flattened export records only the final visible pixel at each position. It does not preserve why the pixel has that value or which original layers contributed to it.

This tool solves a narrower problem. It samples visible RGB colors from a scaled preview, places initial centers across the image’s luminance range, repeatedly assigns samples to their nearest center, recalculates the centers, and then maps every visible pixel to one of those groups. The preview is computed at a browser-friendly size; each download repeats the assignment at the source dimensions using the same centers. The result is deterministic for the loaded file and chosen count in this implementation.

Color grouping can coincide with production needs. A flat red jacket may separate from a pale background; a dark line and shadow group may help build a selection; a limited-palette cel image may divide into useful repaint regions. But coincidence is not understanding. If the red jacket and red sign share colors, they remain together. If one jacket contains light, shadow, reflected light, compression, and texture, it may be distributed across several groups.

Work from the highest-quality authorized source available. PNG usually avoids JPEG block and ringing artifacts, while a high-quality WebP can also be practical. A compressed screenshot may introduce dozens of near colors around edges and text, making the grouping less useful. Crop browser chrome, captions, borders, and unrelated material because every visible color participates in the analysis. Preserve an untouched copy and record where the source came from.

Existing transparency is respected because fully transparent pixels are skipped. Semi-transparent pixels still contain RGB values and can influence a cluster. Glows, soft shadows, motion blur, fog, and translucent hair edges are therefore likely to fragment or spill. If the source already has a clean subject mask, preserve it separately and consider applying clustering only inside that mask in an image editor. This page does not accept a second mask or provide region-aware clustering.

Check the file limits before blaming the artwork. The interface accepts JPG, PNG, and WebP up to 24 MB, 8,000 pixels on either side, and 12 megapixels. Analysis and full-resolution export now yield between row batches so the interface can repaint, but large images can still strain a mobile browser. If analysis or export fails, make a working copy at a smaller dimension, keep the original untouched, and scale or rebuild final masks in a desktop editor where memory and selection tools are easier to control.

Two clusters often behave like a broad light-versus-dark separation. Three or four can reveal a limited palette: background, character midtones, dark structure, and a bright accent. Five to eight can isolate smaller color families, but they also divide gradients and anti-aliased edges more aggressively. The correct count is not the number of objects or original layers. It is the smallest number that creates a useful selection for the next editing task.

Run a low count first and inspect coverage. A very large group may contain the background plus several light objects; a tiny group may be a valuable accent or merely compression noise. Increase the count when two important palette families remain merged. Decrease it when one object is split into many fragments that you would immediately recombine. The percentage shown in each card refers to the scaled preview’s occupied pixels, not area semantics or a quality score.

Centroids are computed from the image rather than chosen by name. The layers are not ordered as foreground, character, shadow, or importance. Their order can change when the count changes because the statistical centers change. Download and label useful groups in your own working file. Do not build an automated production dependency on “layer 2 is always hair” or “layer 4 is always background.” This interface makes no such guarantee.

The checkerboard reveals transparency. Scan the silhouette at full preview size and then at thumbnail size. Look for holes inside flat regions, colored fringe around line art, isolated pixels in the background, and important edges divided between neighboring clusters. A group that looks coherent in a small card may still contain unrelated objects elsewhere in the composition. Toggle or stack downloaded groups in an editor to understand how they reconstruct the source.

Anti-aliased edges are mixtures of two colors. A dark line on a pale background can create gray transition pixels; a teal jacket against amber light can create intermediate edge colors. Nearest-center assignment gives each pixel to only one group, so the boundary may look jagged or carry a halo when viewed alone. Clean the mask with expand, contract, feather, decontaminate, or manual brush tools appropriate to the image, and compare the repaired composite against the original.

Small islands are not automatically errors. They may be eye highlights, metal reflections, distant lights, or intentional texture. Decide based on the next task. For a broad recolor mask, remove noise and combine groups. For restoring a limited-palette look, preserve purposeful accents. Keep an untouched exported group before destructive cleanup so another person can see what came from the tool and what was changed manually.

Dark line art can cluster together when it is consistently black or near black, but the same group may include pupils, hair, clothing, deep cast shadows, shelves, and night sky. If the goal is a line layer, use the dark group as a starting selection and remove non-line areas manually. A dedicated threshold, channel, vector, or source-layer workflow may produce a better line mask. This splitter does not analyze stroke shape or topology.

Cel shading can respond well when local color and shadow use discrete values. Painted, airbrushed, or gradient shading usually spans many colors and several groups. A “shadow cluster” may also collect unrelated dark local colors. Recoloring it blindly can change hair, eyes, outlines, and background objects. Use selections with layer masks and adjustment layers so the original remains available, and check skin and neutral materials for unintended shifts.

Glow, bloom, rim light, atmospheric perspective, and screen-like effects are especially difficult because they are created by mixing layers in the original file. The flat composite contains the blend result, not the underlying emission or clean object. A bright cluster can isolate some glow pixels but cannot recover the original effect source or blend mode. Rebuild important light effects from scratch when the asset needs editable production behavior.

A character on a plain contrasting background can separate well because color and object boundaries align. A character inside a detailed scene often shares skin, clothing, shadow, and highlight colors with the environment. Color clustering will cut across both. If you need a clean foreground subject, use manual masking, a dedicated segmentation or matting workflow, or the original layered file. Inspect hair, fingers, straps, transparent fabric, and contact shadows at high zoom.

Even a clean visible subject mask cannot restore the background behind it. Those pixels were never stored in the flat image. Removing the character will reveal transparency or guessed paint, not the original unobstructed room. Reconstruct the background with painting, cloning, authorized source plates, or a separate generation workflow and label invented areas. Do not imply that the splitter recovered hidden scene data.

Contact shadows require a production choice. They may belong with the subject for compositing, with the ground for environment continuity, or on their own multiply layer in an original file. Color clustering decides only by RGB similarity. Preserve a copy of the source relationship, then manually assign or repaint the shadow based on how the extracted element will be used. Otherwise the subject may float or carry an unwanted patch of background.

Each PNG download uses the original width and height, with unassigned pixels transparent. Import every chosen layer at the same canvas origin and do not trim, scale, or resample individual files before alignment. Stack all groups in normal mode to compare against the source. Small differences can arise from browser color handling and format conversion, so keep the original visible for reference rather than assuming the recomposite is archival proof.

Rename layers by their actual editing purpose after inspection: “dark selection with hair cleanup,” “warm light accents,” or “background candidate” is more honest than “hair” when the mask still includes other objects. Combine groups non-destructively with layer masks. Repair edges at the final output scale, because a mask that looks acceptable at half size may show halos in print or animation. Save the editor’s native layered file separately from the raw PNG exports.

The page downloads layers individually. It does not create a ZIP or PSD, preserve color profiles as a production pipeline, generate blend modes, name semantic parts, or attach rights metadata. A handoff should include the untouched source, raw cluster PNGs, cleaned masks, working file, notes on invented paint, and the final output. This record prevents a later collaborator from assuming the color groups were original authored layers.

This splitter loads the selected file through browser APIs, creates object URLs and canvases locally, and does not send the source to an application endpoint in this implementation. Removing or replacing the image revokes its temporary object URL; closing the page clears the working state. Browser extensions, device policies, screenshots, downloads, and other site tools have their own behavior, so local processing here is not a universal privacy promise about the entire device or website.

Local processing does not grant permission to modify an image. Use artwork you created, licensed, or are authorized to transform. Public availability is not the same as a commercial license. Record the creator, source, license or consent, intended use, and any restrictions. If the image contains a real person, private information, a protected character, a client asset, or confidential production work, follow the relevant agreement before loading, modifying, or sharing it.

Before release, inspect the recomposed artwork for missing credits, accidental logos, signatures, watermarks, cultural symbols, and changes that alter meaning. Describe significant edits when required. For accessible use, write alt text for the final visible image rather than narrating the hidden layer stack unless the layers themselves are instructional content. When the derived asset moves into advertising, merchandise, or publication, recheck the source rights and production record.
